Extensive Market Inspections Across Several Regions
Under the guidance of Anuradha Gupta, Controller of Legal Metrology, enforcement teams have been actively monitoring markets in several districts, including Jammu, Doda, Rajouri, Srinagar, Kulgam, and Bandipora. These inspections focus on businesses selling essential commodities that are in high demand during Ramadan. The objective is to identify any violations and take necessary actions against those who do not follow the prescribed regulations.
Inspection Operations in Doda and Srinagar
In Doda, the Legal Metrology Dept conducted a joint inspection along with the district administration. Officials visited nearly 40 traders to check their adherence to metrology standards. Those found guilty of violating the rules were fined immediately to discourage unfair practices.
Similarly, in Srinagar, enforcement teams intensified their monitoring activities in major commercial areas like Batmalloo and Tengpora. The teams discovered instances of non-compliance, leading to on-the-spot fines. A total of Rs 6,000 in penalties was collected from traders who failed to meet legal requirements. This action reaffirmed the Department’s commitment to maintaining fairness and accuracy in trade practices.
Surprise Checks in Rajouri, Jammu, Kulgam, and Bandipora
In Rajouri, the Legal Metrology Dept, working closely with the district administration, carried out sudden inspections at various shops, including those selling meat and poultry. During these visits, one trader was found violating trade regulations and was fined Rs 1,000.
Meanwhile, in Jammu, six cases of non-compliance were detected during inspections, resulting in a total fine of Rs 8,000. This action reinforced the need for businesses to follow legal metrology standards while carrying out transactions.

Similarly, in Bandipora, three traders were found to be non-compliant with legal metrology norms. They were fined a total amount of Rs 1,500. These actions were taken to ensure that fair trade practices are followed, especially during the sacred month of Ramadan when consumer spending on essential goods increases significantly.
Ensuring Fair Trade and Consumer Protection
Anuradha Gupta, Controller of Legal Metrology, emphasized the Dept’s firm stance on protecting consumer rights and ensuring fair business transactions. She stressed the importance of traders strictly following the Legal Metrology Act and its associated regulations, particularly while dealing with essential commodities. The Dept has adopted a zero-tolerance approach towards those engaging in deceptive trade practices that could negatively impact consumers.
The ongoing inspections serve as a warning to traders who attempt to exploit consumers through dishonest means. The Dept remains committed to carrying out regular inspections and enforcing the law to maintain fairness in the market. Businesses are expected to comply with trade laws, and those who fail to do so will face penalties.
The Impact of Market Inspections
These market inspections play a crucial role in promoting fair trade and safeguarding consumer interests. By holding traders accountable for their actions, the Legal Metrology Dept ensures that people receive correct measurements and fair pricing when making purchases. This initiative is particularly significant during Ramadan, a time when market activity is at its peak.
The department’s stringent measures also help in discouraging traders from engaging in fraudulent activities such as overpricing, short-weighing, and misrepresentation of goods. By imposing fines and taking legal action against offenders, the authorities send a clear message that unethical business practices will not be tolerated.
Future Steps and Continued Vigilance
As Ramadan progresses, the Legal Metrology Dept remains vigilant in its efforts to ensure compliance with trade regulations. Officials will continue to monitor markets and take strict action against any violations. Traders are urged to conduct business ethically and adhere to all legal requirements to avoid penalties and maintain consumer trust.
The Dept also encourages consumers to report any irregularities they observe in the market. By working together, both traders and consumers can help create a fair and transparent business environment. The Legal Metrology Dept reassures the public that it will remain proactive in addressing any issues related to unfair trade practices and consumer rights violations.
